Gothenburg in West Sweden – with four Michelin-starred restaurants - is the country’s culinary capital. The region outside Gothenburg has a wide range of produce to light up the menus of West Sweden’s eateries including fresh oyster, lobster, langoustine, mussels and prawns from the west coast plus game, beaver, berries and mushrooms from the forest, lakes and farmland north and east of Gothenburg. This area is a heaven for foodies and here are just a few culinary high lights:
Salt & Sill, KlädesholmenHerring lovers should head for Salt & Sill on ‘herring island’ Klädesholmen, about one our north of Gothenburg (just off the Tjörn island). This is the place where you match various types of herring with the right schnapps. Sit out on the jetty, where people are arriving in sailing boats and yachts or inside by the fireplace. Since Salt & Sill is undergoing a total makeover and will soon offer hotel rooms too. Please check opening hours before heading for this herring paradise – and of course there is a large menu for non-herring eaters too. Salt & Sill is a certified ‘Västsvensk Mersmak’ restaurant. More information Handelsman Flink, FlatönHandelsman Flink is a hotel and coastal restaurant located on Flatön island about one hour north of Gothenburg. It is a charming family-run hotel and restaurant and chef Niclas is also the fisherman. Using local ingredients including fresh fish, oysters, shrimps, lobster and locally made cheese, the restaurant will give a true flavour of the region. When the lobster season starts at the end of September, join Niclas out on a lobster safari to catch and prepare your own dinner. Handelsman Flink is a certified ‘Västsvensk Mersmak’ restaurant. On the menu you will find game, lake fish and specialties such as smoked Beaver with cottage cheese and avocado salad. Nearby accommodation includes family cottages at Stenebynas or Baldersnäs Manor house near Dals Långed. Falkholts is a certified ‘Västsvensk Mersmak’ restaurant. Gunnebo House & Garden, MölndalTo get a countryside lunch just 15 minutes from the city centre, head for eighteenth century Gunnebo House and Gardens at Mölndal, just outside Gothenburg.
