Islands of the Bohuslän coastThere are a huge number of interesting, picturesque islands along the Bohuslän coast. Many feature an excellent selection of seafood restaurants, not to mention fine swimming and unique plant and animal life. Each island has its own special character and the list below only includes a fraction of all the islands that are worth a visit. During the high season in July and early August some islands have inter-island ferry services, but more commonly they are accessed by regular ferry traffic from the mainland, and some of the larger islands by bridges. Some well-known coastal townsThe Bohuslän coast stretches from Göteborg in the south to the Svinesund Bridge just north of Strömstad. The province of Bohuslän is one of Sweden’s most popular summertime destinations. What is typical of Bohuslän are the smooth, sculptural granite rocks, the boating life and the small picturesque fishing villages, each with its own character. There’s a virtually endless number of small coastal towns that are worth visiting, and a few are listed below. Lobster – Black Gold of the SeaOn the Bohuslän coast, it has been as natural to fish for lobster as it has been for people in other parts of the country to hunt elk. The lobster season starts on the first Monday after September 20. So this year (2008), on September 22, at 7 am the west coast will transform into a huge seafood party, from the tiniest boatshed to the fanciest gourmet restaurant. The seas will also be full – of boats trying to secure the best fishing sports.Oysters and the Oyster AcademyOysters from the west coast of Sweden rank among the best in the world, because they grow slowly in cold water. They are exported in small amounts to first-rate restaurants all over the world. Most Swedish oysters come from Bohuslän, and are hand-picked mainly near Grebbestad, which is also where the oyster safaris leave from. Experience the Bohuslän coast by bicycleBohuslän is well equipped with good bike paths, and they pass through magnificent countryside. The path from Göteborg to the Norwegian border is part of the North Sea Cycle Route, which runs from Scotland through England, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and Sweden. Dive the Bohuslän coastIn terms of clarity and quality, the water along the Bohuslän coast is as good as any in Sweden. Vision ranges from 10 to 30 metres and you find cod, mackarel, cuckoo wrasse, anglerfish, catfish and many other species. Lobster and crab are plentiful, you can often spot seals, and there are even both soft and hard corals that most people think are only found in the Tropics. Marstrand and Carlsten’s FortressMarstrand is one of the most famous towns on the Bohuslän coast, and is renowned for its intense boating culture, Carlsten’s Fortress and its history as a playground for royals. The island of King Oscar II has been a summertime gathering place for boaters and party lovers since the 19th century, but its greatest charm is probably the beautiful wooden architecture of the town. In the beginning of July , Marstrand hosts the Swedish Match Cup – a competition that attracts some of the world’s best sailors.
Göteborg Archipelago Strömstad is a well-known coastal town In Sweden the lobster season starts on the first Monday after September 20 and finish April 31. Oysters from the west coast of Sweden rank among the best in the world. Pass through magnificent countryside by bicycle.
